Permits

The first thing that needs to be done is acquiring all of the necessary permits for the well. Clearing the Area

After you’ve obtained the necessary permits, the well drilling company will determine the best location for your well. They will analyze the geology of your property and find an area that is most likely to hold groundwater. The area where the well will be installed must be cleared of vegetation and other obstacles. Uproot plants that may get in the way and move them to another part of your property. Try not to do too much tilling while removing the plants, you want the soil to maintain its structural integrity to avoid collapses when the well is drilled. Consult with your well drilling professional on the best way to clear the area of vegetation.

Now that the area has been determined and the plans are set, you need to make sure that the equipment can actually make it to the site. Well drilling equipment can be massive, with 40+ foot rigs and trucks that weigh tons. Tree branches, light poles, powerlines, and other obstacles can make it impossible for this equipment to make it through. You may need to hire professionals to clear everything out before the well drilling company can come to do an installation.

Finally, it’s drilling day. The crew will come with all the necessary equipment and make sure the area is leveled for their rig. Once level, they will raise the drill tower and put the first rod down for drilling. They drill through the overburden, which is a layer of dirt, rock, and clay that rests above the bedrock. They will also advance the casing down the well as they drill.

Drill rods are placed every 20 feet of drilling until they reach the bedrock. The bedrock is where groundwater is typically found. Once they water, they will drill for a few more feet before finishing. They will then install the well pump, which keeps the well’s tank and filled with a constant supply of water.

Plumbing & Water Quality

With the well drilled and the water pump in place, it is now possible to connect the water well to the plumbing systems it will be used for. However, it is absolutely essential to have your water quality tested before using the well. A professional can come to test your water to supply and remedy any issues they may find through professional water treatment. Once you have clean water and the plumbing hooked up, you’re ready to enjoy your well!
